(Not so) Random Start: Intronaut - “Killing Birds with Stones”
I’m still making my way through the 40+ hour list of 2013 albums I made just to make sure I haven’t overlooked anything, thus the “not so”. Yesterday I only made it through QOTSA, Meek Is Murder, KEN Mode, Ghost Thrower, and Light Bearer. Habitual Levitations is an album I haven’t listened to once all year because Intronaut is one of those bands that I don’t really like from a genre that I constantly indulge in. However, so many people tout this band as transcendent, especially of the post-metal genre. With this opening track I can kind of already tell that it’s still not something I enjoy, but I’m an OCD completist when it comes to music so, I’ll make it through the entire record. Hopefully I can make it through more than 5 today.
(Not so) Random Start: Queens of the Stone Age - “Keep Your Eyes Peeled”
Even though I’m pretty sure I know what my top 10 are going to be, last night I sat down and queued up 38 hours of music that came out this year that I might even slightly be interested in to make sure I didn’t overlook anything. I think I listened to …Like Clockwork a week or 2 ago and decided it wasn’t one of my favorites by QOTSA, but no harm in listening again. I’m definitely open to taking suggestions if you think this list is missing something: http://open.spotify.com/user/121686146/playlist/6b6cUwxVFdVQUdqIcD21Ub.
Random Start: O.G.C. (Originoo Gunn Clappaz) - “Calm Before Da Storm”
I know I don’t throw much hip-hop up on here, but this is one of my favorite hip-hop records of all time. This isn’t exactly one that gets you hyped, it’s just super smooth and chill with some really dark beats. This is the first track off of the record and it really sets the tone for the entire album.
Random Start: The Velvet Teen - “Penning the Penultimate”
If you’re about to spend Thanksgiving alone, maybe don’t listen to this song. The track that came up is actually off of Out of the Fierce Parade, but I couldn’t find that so here is the Elysium version. Not terribly different, but noticeably to me. Anyway, this is one of my favorite sad songs. HAPPY HOLIDAYS!
Random Start: Examination of the… “Kicking a Dead Horse Aside”
I know I’ve talked about this song before, but not in a random start. Originally one of those midwest skramz kind of bands, Examination of the… surprised a lot of people with their Neurosis laden 4 song full length The Whitest of Elephants. This opening track has, what I consider to be, one of the heaviest moments in post-metal existence, if not all of music. That might sound like hyperbole, but I hate hyperbole so, if you don’t agree with me then just know this is where my mind goes when I think of heavy. Anyway, this moment exists between 5:58 and 7:07 on this track.
Random Start: Statues - “Dry Springs, Empty Wells”
When I was stumbling upon Australian chaotic hardcore/metal bands, Statues is another band that popped up. I haven’t latched onto them like I have Heiress (Au), but this split they did with Life Pilot (also worth checking out) is a pretty solid effort.
Random Start: Botch - “Saint Matthew Returns to the Womb”
I have a feeling today is not going to be my day so, I could definitely use a win like this to start it off musically. Plus, I love watching this video because it reminds me of the shows growing up. It also reminds me that not everyone grew up like this and it confuses me why people wouldn’t want to.
Random Start: A Light in the Attic - “Only in Lies”
I think I found this band because they shared a member with Yaphet Kotto, but this is way heavier. Lately, I’ve been hearing a lot of bands coming out of the San Francisco and Northern California area with this sort of screamo/skramz/powerviolence brand of hardcore, Loma Prieta for one example. Not that when A Light in the Attic was doing it, it was something original, but they are probably my favorite band that plays this style.
Even though I grew up listening to a lot of Clutch, specifically this album, I didn’t get what they were about for a while. Like, I thought they were this heavy metal band so, some of the more rock and roll and jam aspects of their music confused me. Later on, I figured it out and enjoyed it even more, but as a high school kid I gravitated towards the faster heavier stuff so, this, of course, was my favorite song by them.
Kind of a strange band out of Leeds, England. Like an experimental metal/hardcore band with quirky atmosphere. This 10 minute track definitely lets you know what this band is about and if you’d like to hear more off their one Metal Blade release Lost in Rock.
