My favorite comment “I think the joke here is that they made a Tim & Eric skit funny.”
A Relevant Story
A few years ago I was walking alone through downtown Asheville, NC and I walked by these 2 guys that looked 10-15 years older than me. I ended up looking one of them straight in the eyes because I knew I recognized him and he’s looking back at me with the same kind of stare. I have this buddy, Josh, who knows everyone in Asheville. We’re talking all ages; teenagers, college kids, older folks, etc. I mean, we can’t walk down the street for more than 5 steps before we have to stop and talk to somebody he knows. So, I’m looking at this guy like it’s somebody Josh has introduced me to and I’m thinking we’re about to say something to each other. I kind of feel like a dick because I have no clue where I remember him from and I’m about to add another awkward moment to my infinite list. However, we casually walk by each other without any interaction, no words exchanged, not even an acknowledging head nod. I had completely dismissed the anticlimactic encounter until I got to work. One of my coworkers was a little depressed saying, “I’m bummed to be at work. Tonight is the Beastie Boys secret show.” Then it hits me. The reason I thought I knew who this guy on the street was is because it was MCA. He was looking at me dead in the eyes because he thought I was about to flip out and ask for an autograph or a picture or whatever. Even before today, I always liked to think that he felt relieved and appreciated not having to deal with at least one more unruly fan. I’ve never seen the Beastie Boys live and, to be honest, I wouldn’t exactly call myself a big fan. I mean, I have a few of their records (Check Your Head probably being my favorite), but I think my fondest memories will be their impact on the skate community, specifically my friends whom I skated with. Thankfully, I was at least a casual fan or those car rides to Richmond, VA Beach, Williamsburg, Norfolk, D.C., etc. would have been excruciating with the excess of Paul’s Boutique or Ill Communication that were constantly blaring. I never say “rest in peace” because I hope we’re all partying even harder in the beyond, but I will say thanks for the memories.
